Presidência brasileira do G20, Sociedade Civil e Transparência
Brazil assumed the presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20) in 2024, placing it at the forefront of global economic governance. Since 1999, the G20 has been an important platform for the world's largest economies, representing around 85% of global GDP and 75% of international trade. As a founding member, Brazil has always been active in G20 discussions, advocating for the interests of emerging economies and inclusive growth.
Now, the presidency provides Brazil with a platform to increase its influence and focus on its priorities of sustainable development, economic recovery, digital transformation, and global health. Through national forums, thematic working groups, digital platforms, and partnerships, Brazil is integrating civil society perspectives into the G20 process. This representation includes various demographic groups, such as women, youth, and indigenous communities.
An example of this is the recent meeting of the G20 Digital Economy Working Group in São Luís, Maranhão, where participants discussed the safe use of the internet, data protection, and multisectoral collaboration. Civil society from around the world was represented there by the Civil20 (C20). The C20 develops policy recommendations for G20 leaders, and Brazil ensures that these are considered in the dialogue and outcomes of the meetings. Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) are also included in the G20 parallel event, “States of the Future,” which aims to reimagine the capabilities of state-owned enterprises.
Brazil monitors and assesses its engagement with NGOs/CSOs to improve consultations, as well as offering workshops and training sessions to help NGOs/CSOs effectively participate in G20 processes. The president of C20 also leads ABONG (Brazilian Association of Non-Governmental Organizations), a national platform that coordinates NGOs/CSOs, and produced this G20 guide.
More broadly, Brazil consults its public on the G20 agenda through focus groups, polls, surveys, and platforms with real-time feedback and interaction to increase transparency. Transparency itself is, of course, a theme for NGOs/CSOs contributions, including in regard to government policies such as anti-corruption measures. At Impactodo, we believe that NGOs/CSOs practicing transparency are the best positioned to advocate for transparency across all sectors.
Having a transparency seal for NGOs is vital to ensure trust and legitimacy in the social sector. It proves that the organization adopts ethical and responsible practices, as well as ensuring that the resources raised are used efficiently. This recognition not only attracts more donors but also strengthens partnerships and expands the impact of initiatives.
