Atraindo Fundações que Não Aceitam Propostas Não Solicitadas
It’s frustrating when you’re an NGO/CSO trying to raise funds and the foundations you wish to apply to only accept proposals by invitation. As explained by the Philanthropy Roundtable, foundations sometimes do this due to the administrative burden placed on foundation staff to process unsolicited proposals—and, conversely, the burden on NGOs/CSOs to prepare proposals that won’t be considered. Others simply aren’t seeking new grantees, instead focusing on maintaining the capacity and sustainability of their existing beneficiaries, particularly limited-life foundations nearing the end of their philanthropic activity.
However, even when you’re unable to request funding directly, you can still promote your work through marketing and communications to familiarize foundation grantmakers with your value. Even if you don’t receive an invitation to submit a proposal, you’ll be initiating practices that can benefit future invite-only funding opportunities and other audiences. For example, the Roundtable suggests:
- if you produce a newsletter, add the foundation staff to your recipient list
- Strengthen your social media presence with excellent content (including any media coverage) to connect with funders there
- Attend events where you can meet foundation staff and present any relevant materials your organization has created
- If your current donors promote your impact on their websites, make sure the information is up to date
- If a foundation accepts Letters of Inquiry (LOIs), ensure you’re eligible and aligned with their mission and current funding priorities before applying
- In your LOI, link your services and impact to their strategic priorities and ask how your NGO/CSO can obtain support in the future
Fundraising for NGOs/CSOs/OCIPs is crucial to making projects that promote positive social impact possible. Without adequate resources, many organizations struggle to sustain their operations or expand their initiatives. A strategic fundraising process helps attract supporters, ensure financial stability, and maximize the outcomes of their actions.
